Digital Radio Broadcasting in Australia
Foreword
I am pleased to be able to release this discussion paper on digital radio broadcasting on behalf of the Digital Radio Advisory Committee.
Digital radio broadcasting (DRB) is a new and improved means of broadcasting radio services to the public. It promises a great deal for the future of radio broadcasting in Australia with the delivery of a range of new and innovative services to all Australians.
The Digital Radio Advisory Committee was established in August 1995 by the former Minister for Communications and the Arts as a forum for interested parties to discuss the technological, planning and policy implications of the introduction of DRB, and to provide the Government with advice on the associated issues. The committee has established terms of reference and membership representing broadcasters, telecommunications carriers, manufacturers, consumers and government agencies, with an independent chair. The terms of reference are included at Appendix 1 and a list of members of the committee is included at Appendix 2.
To assist in its deliberations on DRB, the committee wishes to obtain comments from all interested parties by way of this discussion paper. Comment is invited not only on the issues identified in the paper, but also on any other issues viewed as relevant to the introduction of DRB.
The options and proposals canvassed in the paper are intended to stimulate discussion. They do not represent the final view of the committee or any of its members.
Comments received will contribute to the committee's further deliberations and assist in its task of advising the Minister for Communications and the Arts.
