Australia on CD is a truly innovative project, taking us on an interactive journey through Australia's cultural endeavour, artistic performance and heritage achievements.
The program brings together our multimedia industry, national cultural institutions and content creators, to digitally preserve our stories - the people and events which shape and define the Australian way of life.
The first CD-ROM in the program was released in late May 1997 and now, two years later, the final title in the series is due to be released.
The ten Australia on CD titles are:
Under a Southern Sun: Stories from the Australian Landscape - a challenge to explore a number of Australian art works to discover the link between the artists, the environment and many other disciplines.
Tales from the Kangaroo's Crypt: 4 billion years of extraordinary Australia - investigate the prehistory of Australia. You can discover unique Australian fossils from a variety of important sites, while learning how Australia's land and wildlife originated.
Voices from a War: The Australian experience of World War II - investigate some of the elements of World War II which helped shape the Australia we know today by exploring the war experiences of living veterans.
Real Wild Child!! - a wild ride through the history of Australian rock music and youth culture from the 1950s to the 1990s.
Convict Fleet to Dragon Boat - explore Australia's multicultural diversity and the contribution different cultures have made through the eyes of migrants themselves.
Ingenious! - solve a series of unique Australian scientific problems while you learn about the role of science in Australian culture.
Moorditj: Australian Indigenous Cultural Expressions - centres on the relationship between the production of contemporary indigenous art and indigenous cultural heritage. Explore the breadth and depth of this relationship in an interactive journey.
StageStruck - explore backstage to discover the people and the processes involved in creating theatre, dance and opera in Australia. See how creative you can be in rehearsing the performers on script and choreography, and designing sound, music, set and costumes.
Mission Australia - an invitation to do your bit to help keep Australia's environment healthy. From the mountains to the sea, the CD-ROM explores the rich and diverse environment that is Australia.
Play the Game - looks at the broader significance of sport in Australia's cultural life. From the first Australian Rules game in Victoria to the future Sydney Olympic site, the CD-ROM takes you on journey through the history of Australian sport.
Two copies of each CD-ROM are sent to all Australian primary and secondary schools, public libraries, Austrade offices and overseas missions.
While the Australia on CD Program is now coming to a close, the new media journey through Australian cultural experience and expression continues online at Australia's Cultural Network www.acn.net.au.
