Coles Myer becomes first Centenary Patron

The National Council for the Centenary of Federation has announced that Coles Myer Ltd has accepted its invitation to become a Patron for the Centenary Year.

As a Patron, Coles Myer will be contributing towards Centenary events and projects around the country, and will work with the National Council and State and Territory Committees to assist with centenary activities at a local level.

The National Council established the Patrons' Program and national sponsorship opportunities to channel the interest and support of the corporate sector.

While the Federal and State and Territory Governments have contributed considerable resources for projects and activities to mark the Centenary Year, the Council recognises that the support of corporate Australia will broaden the scope and reach of the anniversary.

A space for reconciliation in the Art of Place

Indigenous artists have until 31 March 2000 to enter the fifth National Indigenous Heritage Art Award. This highly successful, nationwide art competition and associated exhibition, The Art of Place, is a much anticipated biennial event in Canberra.

The Australian Heritage Commission offers the awards-and prize money totalling $44 000-to encourage Indigenous people to use their art to communicate the significance of their special heritage places. Indigenous artists across the nation are invited to submit work that represents a place they believe to be part of their heritage.

For the first time in 2000, an award will be given in a 'Reconciliation Category' for artworks created by Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists working together.

This year, the Art Award, including the Art of Place Exhibition, will be
a key event at Old Parliament House in Canberra during the Olympic Games.
