Drivers of the Information Economy

DCITA conducts projects to provide clarity on the drivers of evolutionary change in the information economy.  Emergent patterns that offer promise are investigated and progress facilitated.

Overview

As an evolving and dynamic system, the information economy has a range of drivers and impacts.  Causal relationships are not easy to discern and are often intertwined with effects.  Drivers of change may also be the resultant impacts of change through positive or negative feedback loops. This complex interplay of causal agents, catalysts, blockages, and effects with feedback loops makes understanding the dynamics of the information economy and the effectiveness of policy levers quite difficult to assess.  DCITA is conducting projects to provide clarity of these drivers and to seed emergent patterns where they offer promise for future innovation and productivity.

Projects

Creative Industries Cluster Study

Dynamic clusters have the potential to improve the efficiency and international competitiveness of these industries.  The Creative Industries Cluster Study provides analysis and mapping of the industries producing digital content and applications known as the creative industries.

ICT and innovation

It has been recognised that innovation has been a key driver of economic growth in many economies.  In some economies, innovation in the ICT sector has had a major impact on national income and prosperity although a large ICT sector is not a pre-requisite for growth.  DCITA plans to conduct research into the dynamics of innovation in ICT and its role in establishing new products, services and viable business models.

During 2002, a project was undertaken to analyse and scope the future development of Australia's ICT sector over a five to ten year timeframe.  Two concurrent exercises were conducted; a mapping exercise to ascertain where Australia's ICT sector currently stands in the fast-moving global marketplace and a foresighting exercise to seek to identify the major drivers of technologically driven economic development globally and the underpinning likely success factors over the next decade. The Government's Framework for the Future Steering Committee released the report This link opens a document in Word format Enabling Our Future (File size: 343Kb) in April 2003.
