Knowledge Management

Knowledge management highlights the value placed on people, processes and technology that use content to develop organisational capability and culture.

Overview

Understanding the wider business environment through the information economy prism focuses on the role that information and communications technologies play in shaping business models, competitiveness and growth.  Another prism is that of knowledge management which focuses on the role of knowledge creation, sharing and networks in shaping competitiveness and growth.  Knowledge management highlights the value placed on people, processes and technology that use content to develop organisational capability and culture.  The combination of information economy activities and knowledge management serves to maximise the capacity for organisations to sustain growth and for economy-wide benefits to accrue through skills development and knowledge transfer.

Projects

Australian Public Service Case Studies on Knowledge Management

DCITA is coordinating the preparation of a series of case studies on the effective use of knowledge management within various Australian Public Service agencies and departments.  The case studies demonstrate the wide range of knowledge management activities that are conducted along with their symbiotic linkages with the use of information and communications technology and content management approaches.  The dissemination of these case studies complement the activities outlined in the Australian Government's This link sends you off DCITA's websiteBetter Services, Better Government e-government strategy.

In February 2004, the first series of case studies was published.  These case studies are designed to assist fellow APS knowledge management practitioners in understanding how other agencies are tackling their KM challenges and to outline possible pathways for approaching their own particular situation.

Australian Interim Standard on Knowledge Management

DCITA is represented on the This link sends you off DCITA's websiteStandards Australia committee developing a Standard on Knowledge Management.  An Interim Standard (AS-5037 Int) was released in early 2003. The committee is actively seeking feedback on the merits and applicability of the Interim Standard to assist in their deliberations on the development of the formal Standard.  This link sends you off DCITA's websiteMore information (Note external link)
