Greater exposure for dance
Greater Exposure, a new Canberra-based consultancy has now been established to ensure Australian dance projects and companies take up the opportunity to tour.
The Cultural Facilities Corporation, Ausdance National and the Australian Choreographic Centre are combining their experience and resources to facilitate Greater Exposure. The consultancy will be managed by Ms Carla Hartog through the Canberra Theatre Centre and has been funded under Playing Australia, the Commonwealth Government's national performing arts touring program.
'Greater Exposure has the potential to create stronger links between dance presenters and producers, to create new touring partnerships and to result in improved audience development initiatives,' Ms Hartog said.
Announcing the consultancy, the Federal Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Richard Alston hoped 'that the dance touring industry will work closely with the consultancy partners to improve national opportunities for the touring of dance'.
According to Ms Hartog, the consultancy's 12-month contract is a big win for dance companies across Australia.
'This partnership will facilitate greater opportunity for both presenters and producers of dance in the way they participate in the Playing Australia program,' she said. 'It is my role, together with the other partners, to manage the consultancy and act as an advocate for dance touring.'
Compiling a list of dance venues across Australia, establishing the aspirations of dance companies and exploring the possibility of new touring circuits for dance will be among the first items on Ms Hartog's agenda. She will also assist companies with applications for funding through Playing Australia.
'We have two Playing Australia funding rounds next year to work towards so we expect to be very busy,' she said. 'Ultimately, we want more and more people across Australia, in both regional and metropolitan areas, to be exposed to the incredible world of dance.'
Greater Exposure signifies the Commonwealth Government's continuing commitment to the touring of dance through Playing Australia which provides grants to companies, producers and tour organisers to tour performing arts across Australia.
New dance consultancy Greater Exposure will:
- encourage increased communication and information flow between the dance community and presenters;
- assist dance projects and companies to fully participate in the current national touring processes;
- encourage an alternative dance touring circuit;
- assist dance projects and companies with Playing Australia applications and tasks leading up to application writing; and
- research and lobby for the possibility of other funding options for dance touring in Australia.
