% of households with a fixed telephone line
As the chart shows, fixed phone lines are a ubiquitous technology - present in nearly 100 per cent of households in the 14 countries examined in this benchmarking exercise. Despite developments in wireless access, the fixed phone line will remain the main technology for household Internet access for some time to come. An estimated 97% of Australian households have a fixed phone line. Little variation is found between countries as this technology is a basic infrastructure requirement in terms of enabling citizens to participate in the Information Economy. However, some countries still have a significant proportion of households without a fixed phone line connection, in the case of Ireland estimated to be 16% of households. Given the ubiquitous nature of this technology, most countries scored the near maximum number of points available.
