% of persons 16 years and over with use of a mobile phone
Cellular mobile phones are a key technology, providing flexibility in the way we communicate and undertake our day-to-day business. This technology also has significant potential as a tool for providing remote access to the Internet. While Australians have been quick to adopt this technology, their ranking is relatively low compared to other countries in the Asia-Pacific and Europe in terms of the indicator "population 16 years and over with use of a mobile phone." Australia was ranked 8th with an estimated 64% of its population 16 years and over with use of a mobile phone at September 2001. Hong Kong was the leading nation against this indicator with 75%, followed by Norway and Taiwan (69% each), Sweden and New Zealand (68% each), South Korea (66%) and Italy (65%).
