Number of secure servers per 100 000 persons 16 years and over with Internet Access
Measures of secure servers provide one of the best available indicators of the existing infrastructure supporting secure e-commerce. Secure socket layer (SSL) protocol, for example, provides a secure encrypted transmission over TCP-IP networks which enables e-commerce over the Internet. At the beginning of 2001 the US was the country with the highest number of secure servers (49) per 100,000 persons aged 16 years and over with Internet access. Australia and New Zealand followed with 36 secure servers each, ahead of Singapore (31) and Ireland (29).
