Australian Floral Industry On-Line Network (Flornet)
The Australian floral industry has a retail turnover of around $400million. It comprises three distinct strata; growers, wholesalers and retail florists. There is no industry body that integrates all three strata. There is considerable intra-stratum fragmentation and as a consequence, the floral industry is characterised by extremely poor communication systems and very inefficient markets in an economic sense. In turn, the cost of floral products to consumers is higher than it might be with a more efficient marketplace. The project is designed to provide an on-line communications system to the three strata of the floral industry. Consortium members are Petals Network - 1000 independent Australian florists and Cowley Internet.
