Project profiles - round 7
The projects funded in Round 7 cover a range of regional and national initiatives. Many of the projects have a specific focus on small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
Secure Internet Information Exchange in the Health Sector
Conducting eBusiness in the health sector, where privacy is paramount presents significant challenges. This project brings together a range of industry and government players to design and implement a secure Internet information exchange system using secure digital signatures.
By building on a previous project that exchanges secure patient data between doctor and hospital to improve clinical outcomes, this project aims to increase productivity and profitability by streamlining interactions between patients, healthcare providers and payer organisations by developing an e-billing and e-payment system using smart card technology.
Integral to this project is a robust research and evaluation component to test the viability of the concept for wider application in the health care sector. This solution will be trialed at the Brisbane Waters Private Hospital.

Mobilising Construction
There is enormous potential for the building and construction sector to reap the benefits of eBusiness tools. This consortium aims to deliver quantifiable benefits to the construction industry by developing and delivering an eBusiness tool to streamline workflow management. The objective is to reduce major construction project bottlenecks by enabling site-based teams to receive, access and manage critical resources using mobile phone and Internet technologies. Process efficiencies that include safety error reductions and faster project delivery will be trialed on a live construction site in Melbourne and benchmarked for the wider construction industry.
By creating new opportunities to leverage information technologies throughout the construction supply chain, the beneficiaries of this project extend to telecommunication companies, industry groups and building supply networks.

e-EMF for Viticulture
The objective of this project is to drive viticulture productivity by further development of the Australian viticulture industry Environmental Management Framework (EMF) and adapt the framework as an eBusiness management package.
The proposed eBusiness system will allow individual growers and vignerons to use web based tools to document and implement best environmental management practices, based on specific conditions and requirements tailored to individual growers' operations.
The EMF is a SME integration tool to drive viticulture productivity and incorporates an electronic forum and research facility, an environmental management package, an environmental management training program and a best practice guide for the viticulture industry and environmental management and operational benchmarks. This solution will be trialed in the Mornington Peninsular region. The objective of this project is to adapt the Australian viticulture industry's Environmental Management Framework (EMF) for application as an e-commerce management package. The proposed adaptation provides a web-based tool that will allow individual growers and vignerons to document and implement best environmental management practices, based on specific conditions and requirements tailored to individual business conditions.
An electronic forum and research facility, an environmental management package, an environmental management training program, environmental management and operational benchmarks and a best practice guide for the viticulture industry will support the e-EMF.

Appliance Industry e-Commerce Project (Applie-com)
The small appliance industry comprises a competitive group of retailers, wholesalers and suppliers who traditionally operate in isolation to maximise their market share. This project seeks to develop an Australian standard for this industry through a high level of collaboration with the industry stakeholders.
This extensive consortium aims to devise and implement 25 Message Implementation Guidelines (MIGs) to extend cost reductions through efficiency gains. Development of Online Benchmarking Database
Research conducted by Queensland Department of Primary Industriesy (QDPI) and the Bread Research Institute (BRI) identified an urgent need to reduce production costs, improve competitiveness, improve output performance of systems and equipment and also improve worker safety levels within the amenity horticulture industries (plant nurseries, cut flower farms) and turf producers) and the bread baking industry.
This consortium's project's objective is to develop an information network using Internet technology for the generation, evaluation and monitoring of production performance. The network will enable industry members to -
- Access up-to-date information and continually monitor production performance against industry benchmarks
- Instantly evaluate production performance and identify areas where improvements can be made
Identify how industry best performers operate and access current information on industry best practice; - Evaluate the cost/benefit ratio of potential improvements and increase production performance by implementing best practice; and
- Evaluate the effectiveness of improvements implemented and objectively evaluate the performance of products and services sold by allied industry businesses.
The proposed solution project's could be adapted to any production-based industry and this concept will be investigated with the assistance of the Bread Research Institute.
