Major organisations fund
A strong and creative major performing arts sector is crucial to the cultural life of the nation. At its December 1996 meeting, the Cultural Ministers Council reviewed the financial position of Australia's performing arts sector and endorsed certain strategies which the Australia Council's Major Organisations Fund had developed to improve the sector's performance. This included standardising major organisations financial and reporting arrangements and establishing the Major Organisations Working Party.
The working party will explore further strategies to address the financial position of major organisations and identify opportunities to better position the Australian performing arts sector for the 21st century.
The working group comprises Commonwealth and State and Territory representatives, and is due to report to the next meeting of Council in 1998.
In the February 1998 meeting Council agreed that this item should remain on the CMC agenda and that the Major Organisation Working party remain formally constituted and report to Standing Committee on strategies for a coordinated approach to the funding of major organisations in the performing arts industry.
