Dubbo Region (NSW)

The Orana Region demand aggregation broker project “Networking Orana” was managed by the Dubbo City Development Corporation.

The project appointed a broker to encourage broadband take-up, aggregate demand and facilitate the cost effective supply of broadband infrastructure and services.

The project team conducted an extensive survey to establish the level of interest in broadband delivery. Discussions were held with regional shires and the local business community and an ongoing media campaign was conducted. The information was passed to potential operators who had shown interest in establishing wireless broadband services in the region. Subsequently wireless broadband access was provided in Dubbo servicing mainly residential areas unable to access ADSL.

Wireless service supplier Phone Snooper was able to provide access to broadband in Dubbo and Wellington by tapping into the SOUL fibre network.

Over the period of the project Telstra ADSL-enabled seven new exchanges in the region and, by the end of the project, had announced the availability of wireless broadband in Dubbo City.
